One small step for PC and one giant leap for Mac.

2009/07/08

A Mac is going to be a lot harder to get than I had previously thought. I seem to be going back and forth between PC and Mac. I think it is because I am used to the idea of PC troubles, or something like that. I would love to get a Mac (anything other than my netbook would be a blessing at this point), but I am still stuck with the specifications troubles I have mentioned earlier.

I am able to piece together a very nice PC for $650AUD and I think that is the only thing that is holding me back. I think I will have to send some emails out to my Mac-using buddies to see if they can clear some questions up.

I am worried that if I take up video editing and streaming that the Mac Mini won’t be able to handle my expectations of it. Which it probably won’t. But I am only 15 weeks away from finishing school forever, and I should be getting a well paid job some time soon … so maybe I could get my Mac then.

Actually the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If I get a PC now, I will be able to broadcast and video edit sooner, and once I get a job I will deck myself out with Apple gear. Yeah that sounds like a plan. Either that or I have confused everyone.

Hope I didn’t confuse you all.

Custom PC vs. Apple: PC is still in my blood.

2009/07/07

Okay I have my PC packed up and ready to be shipped now; all I need is a buyer. Now onto the problem I’m facing. I have been building PCs since, well, forever. This switch is not going to be easy. While I look on eBay to see what Mac Minis are available for my price range, I think in the back of my mind, “I wonder what PC stats I could get with this price?” Of course the stats on paper are far more impressive.

But, I have to remember that I am going to be using a totally different and less demanding (I think) operating system. Sure, a PC might have four gigs of RAM and a huge hard drive, but I don’t need that much space, and internet/blogging won’t require heaps of RAM.

But of course the little voice is in my head yet again. “James, you will be doing videos in the future … will the Mini be able to cope with that? No.” Damn you little voice.

So as you can see this conversion is not going to be easy. For my videos (depending on the final specs of the Mini) I will have to use my sister’s quad-core machine. But I have my head set to converting to Apple some time soon, and this seems to be a perfect time to do so.

If you are a Mac expert, can you please leave a comment? I would love to ask you some questions.

Hope you all had a better day than mine.
