Four more reasons why you NEED to get the new IPhone 3G…

2009/07/18

After reading Michael Hyatt’s blog post, “Top 10 reasons to buy the new IPhone 3G” I felt that there could be more added to his post. So, I have come up with four more reasons why you need too buy the new IPhone 3G.

If you are considering of buying one, do it. You will not regret it. Its the Rolls Royce of phones, Everything is there or in a option box (app). So lets see what I have come up with. Its pretty obvious, but they are what really matter to me.

  1. Cut, Copy and Paste: I literally use this about one hundred times a day. No joke. So when I found out the new IPhone 3G had it I was so happy and disappointed. Why disappointed? Because I can’t afford it. Why Apple didn’t include this before has got me, it is a need for many. As Chris Pirillo said in his review “I actually used it!” You never know if you are going to use it or not. One day you might find a quote that you like and want to set it as your facebook status. But, you are too lazy to type it out. What do you use? Cut, Copy and Paste, bud.
  2. A landscape QWERTY keyboard: Not having a landscape keyboard would have to be one of the most annoying things you can come across, agreed? This is also great for the elderly person market. Example, my mother likes big buttons so she can see them and it makes it easier to type. So now that the keyboard is landscape she will be able to type much, much faster because the buttons will be spread out much more, making them big and more ideal for her.
  3. Voice Memo’s: Now, this may not be the most appealing to most people but, it makes me cry of happiness. Instead of carrying a notepad and pen with me I will be able to record my blog post idea’s on a cool IPhone, instead of looking like a total freak when I have an “Eureka” moment and randomly start scribbling things down on the notepad I pulled out of my pants. But I am sure there are a lot of other things normal people can think of to use this feature. Apple have also included the “trim” feature which allows you to be able to cut out all those scenes of you yelling at the kids and send the appropriate memo. I am sure plenty of on-the-go parents will appreciate this.
  4. Now before this post had never knew about tethering until, Google provided me with the answers. Good old Google. Tethering is great! I can’t believe I didn’t know what it was (not much of a geek). On the new IPhone you can do it wireless or wired, totally up to you and if I am correct, you were able to do it on the old one’s but you ran the risk of your service being canceled. I am unsure of this.

After seeing all the new features on the new IPhone it is just making (in my opinion) the IPhone more and more invincible. Much like World of Warcraft for MMO’s. Imagine if you fused them two together. Blizzard and Apple will be set.

Prepaid iPhones: Will Australia be left out again?

2009/07/12

Apple will be releasing prepaid iPhones … about time, I say! But it got me thinking: how long will it take for Australia to get them, if at all? This usually happens a lot here in Australia, a first-world country with average internet speeds. Gosh we are even getting beaten by Korea.

But back to the title, Australia seems to be behind with a lot of things causing people to go overseas when it come to purchasing many things, not just hardware, software and gadgets. I myself had to purchase a technician’s tool kit from America because I could not find one here to accommodate my needs.

The iPhone was the biggest evolution in mobile phones, and now they have come out with the speedy version (3Gs) and they are still not here! Come on, Kevin Rudd, stop starving the Aussie geeks. We need loving too.

One small step for PC and one giant leap for Mac.

2009/07/08

A Mac is going to be a lot harder to get than I had previously thought. I seem to be going back and forth between PC and Mac. I think it is because I am used to the idea of PC troubles, or something like that. I would love to get a Mac (anything other than my netbook would be a blessing at this point), but I am still stuck with the specifications troubles I have mentioned earlier.

I am able to piece together a very nice PC for $650AUD and I think that is the only thing that is holding me back. I think I will have to send some emails out to my Mac-using buddies to see if they can clear some questions up.

I am worried that if I take up video editing and streaming that the Mac Mini won’t be able to handle my expectations of it. Which it probably won’t. But I am only 15 weeks away from finishing school forever, and I should be getting a well paid job some time soon … so maybe I could get my Mac then.

Actually the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. If I get a PC now, I will be able to broadcast and video edit sooner, and once I get a job I will deck myself out with Apple gear. Yeah that sounds like a plan. Either that or I have confused everyone.

Hope I didn’t confuse you all.

James Hill

Click on image to make it viewable… Is Apple putting down IE7 or what. But they probably call it telling the truth.

Always read the fine print… You will be surprised.

Safari 4 vs. Internet Explorer 8

2009/07/04

This is quick review, a full in-depth will be coming asap.

Now I know this isn’t a fair fight but I wanted to show you all what pride Apple takes in their Free software.

Okay lets get down to business. This will be review one of many other reviews in my browser wars series. Next up I will benching the new Firefox and Opera. Later on I will also be conducting reviews of portable Internet browsers.

Now before we get to the scores I would like to talk about the the general feel of Safari 4 and Internet Explorer 8. Safari feels much faster and more responsive and it doesn’t bombard you with the Microsoft Bing service. Just Google, which most of us like.

Internet Explorer 8 however feels slower but feels much better than previous Explorers to use. So that means win.

Safari really dominated this round with scoring a final score four times larger than Internet Explorer 8. The picture below shows Microsoft has a lot of work to do.

Safari 4 benchmark result

Safari and Internet E8 results

So overall as we all new Safari is better and is currently holding the A geeks opinion Browsing king title. Next up Firefox 3.5  and Safari 4 go head. Will Safari be .5 better than Firefox?

Invisibility Act: I am sorry.

2009/05/13

For a while there my blogging heart failed, I was over it. Was. But I am back version 2.0. If you are into that sort of thing. My reason for this was darn school, I have been so busy when I get home all I have time to do is well train and more school work.

But as any hardcore geek I was looking for a solution and I have found one. Time Management, the thing I lack. I will be cutting down to a post every two days and I will warn you if I am busy.

My review for Safari 4 BETA is not going to plan, I have had no time for it. I have been flat out training for boxing. I need it.

But that should be coming some time this week as well.

How my reviews will work…

2009/05/04

I got up this morning and  downloaded  Safari 4 BETA. I will have a review coming up at the end of this week. I say the end of this week because I would like to deliver “experienced” reviews.

I believe that you can’t deliver a quality review without any experience with product. If you do a review with the product straight out of the box, you are essentially extending your “hands on” or “un-boxing.” But with hardware I am aware it is a different story.

I intend to get a good solid week with Safari 4 BETA, then you will see the review. But, if you are not as patient as others I will gladly post “first impressions.”

If you have any more products you would like to get reviewed email me, jameshillthegeek@gmail.com (I have no life so a response is guaranteed).

Netbooks sales say “hello” to NASA in space.

2009/05/03

These portable pencil case size machines sales have  sky rocketed here in Australia. This is excellent news for us geeks. With more sales comes more products and a greater selection.

Netbooks are a revolution for PC’s especially for laptops. Now we now how small is too small and we can now begin to produce powerful technology in a fun size package.

The only problem  I can see happening is this, Manufactures (like MSI)decide to start to compete with the Macbook Air. Once this is successful I can guarantee that the netbook market will become invisible. So would you buy a cheaper version of the Macbook Air?

If the quality was good and the specs were ok sure why not? Unlike MSI’s “competition,” which apparently was so poor quality it could be easily snapped by accident. No I just kidding… About the snapping part.

So netbook sales are great at the moment but will it last?

Google Helps Apple’s Customers

2009/04/28

I told you Google is everywhere. Google has just released a brand spanking new Google-based disease for Apple’s iPhone users.

This feature will allow the users to type in what they are looking for, and it will display prices retrieved from various shopping sites. I can see some other uses for this.

Googles latest range of poison's

One is that other online shops can search products they sell and compare their prices, this means lower prices for all (I hope).

This picture is what is thought of “Google’s drug store.”

But, does this mean other smaller, newer iPhone application developers will be pushed down into invisibility by Google’s deadly poison and popularity?

I am just a bit worried about what Google has in store for us next. But time will tell.

Mobile Me – Cloud storage of the future

2009/04/27

Mobile Me, Eee storage and Cloud OS are all types of Cloud storage. Cloud storage is the perfect way of keeping updated everywhere you go, storing precious files from the dangers of hard drive failures and all other things that are bad.

I have Eee storage, it is perfect for me to back up all my data and minimize the risk of losing my valuable data. I can share it with family across the country. What a great idea, perfect for those that are constantly on the move and wish to share their experiences.

I only have 10Gb but I got it for nothing when I purchased my Eee PC but, for those that aren’t in the market for a netbook may I suggest Mobile Me. It is Apple’s well thought out idea for “cloud” storage but they have gone one step ahead.

Mobile Me acts as a portable email client, that allows you to store nearly everything.

I haven’t had the chance to experience Mobile Me but my mate EEngineer has.
